Lighting Spur Off Ring Main Diagram
Ring main and spurs.
Lighting spur off ring main diagram. Every unfused spur can only supply one socket or connection unit. Ring circuits adding a socket outlet 1 there are three ways of adding a socket outlet to a ring circuit. It is just a branch off from the ring main to another socket. The spur not only supplies a socket but may supply fcu s as well.
Cut off the power supply to the relevant circuit from the consumer unit. Make a diagram of where all the cores connect. Spur from existing socket outlet. Spur is a short branch of cable from existing ring main circuit.
The branch can stem from an existing electrical device or from a junction box as pictured above. Hi in this video i m showing how to make a light spur from socket outlet that s on ring circuit. Alternatively the ring can be extended. Evening warehouse1 fitting a fused spur is a minor works certificate and not notifiable as long as the connection to the light is direct and not via any outside junction box also make the fcu an rcd type unless your circuit you are tapping off is already rcd protected.
That is only one spur per socket is allowed and the number of spurs must not exceed the number of sockets. Ring mains as they are called are a series of cables linked together starting and terminating at the same point in a distribution board. The most common is to connect it as a spur and this can be done in two ways. A spur can be connected to an existing socket on either a ring main or a radial circuit providing that socket does not already have a spur.
Feed the spur cable into the junction box. A single cable is added from the new socket and connects to an existing socket on. The cable size is important it has to be either 2 5sq mm or 4 0sq mm twin core and earth these are rated in free air at 24amps or 32amps respectively. The rule is that you can spur off one socket from a point within a ring main circuit or unlimited number of fcus fused to 13a.
Unscrew the junction box cover. The spur can be taken from any socket or fcu within the ring main circuit.
